STONEHENGE!!
Here we have a Resto-Mod of an absolute CLASSIC! The work was performed by a local Altec guru... and has many available, so if you're inclined... run a search and you'll find more!
The work includes BLUEPRINT SPEC'd woodworking/driver surround/(in this pairs case) x-over replacement/grills/magnets etc.
Here is an excerpt from the craftsman..
"The cabinets are designed to a highest standard following general Altec Lansing Model plans and constructed by a fine woodworker with over 30 years of experience who is, by the way, also a big Altec fan and an addict to a good sound! So the original Altec plans were meticulously followed not just for the outside looks but also inside for bracing, which is next to the size and material of the cabinet the most important for sound quality. Each speaker has an exact bracing as the original with addition that no bracing board are touching to avoid any negative resonance. Also the insulation of the cabinet has been upgraded from the original Altec unhealthy fiber glass type of material to more modern.
The result is spectacular! This larger than original Stonehenge speakers sound as good as Altec model 17s but with even improved more accurate or “tighter” bass. So not just they look gorgeous, they sound as good, if not better than the original Altec Model 17s and as towers are easier to place in your room.
The grills are also improved with high quality magnets and lighter material so accurate on and off placing is very easy.
For the pair at hand, the x-overs were upgraded altogether, though the originals are included in the sale (and work fine at last listen).
With a resurgence of vintage Hi-Fi, more have been reminded what fun it can be to hear really great sound... as well, you can't cheat physics... if you want big sound, you NEED big speakers.
The photos almost don't do justice... come check them out!
I must require local pickup at this point for obvious reasons.
