Description

20 October 2025
- Upgraded Kubala-Sosna speaker cables from Realization to Ovation, the latter of which provide greater extension and increased transparency while maintaining, or perhaps extending, the organic sound of the Realization.  The Ovation is a really nice cable.

24 March 2026
- Ovation power cord installed on Vivaldi DAC.
- Realization power cord that I had been using on the DAC moved to the Upsampler.
- Palladian power cord moved to the Statement Next-Gen.

    • Audio Research Reference 10 Linestage Preamplifier; Reference 330M Monoblock Amplifiers

    I have rolled several NOS tubes in the 12AX7 position in the Ref 330M monoblocks.  Happily, the Ref 330M is sensitive to the tube in this position.

    Some notes:
    - Telefunken Smooth Plate - I seem to usually come back to this tube and it is what I am currently running.  In this system it gives a nice musical balance - very powerful and defined bass with nice liquidity in the midrange and high frequencies.  I like the musicality of the system a lot with this tube.
    - Telefunken Ribbed Plate - the bass is tremendously strong and tight, even more so than with the Smooth Plates, and this tube seems a bit more extended on the top end.  However, the high frequencies occasionally seem a little too strident for me on some recordings, but on John Rutter:  Requiem & Five Anthems (Reference Recordings RR-57CD) it is difficult for me to imagine another tube that would out perform it.
    - Amperex Long Plate Bugle Boy Type-I (D-getter) - the mid's and the highs are fantastic, but the bass is not as well defined as with either of the Telefunken tubes.  The bass is there but it's kind of flabby.
    - Amperex Bugle Boy Type-II - I've been told that these are a bit tighter in the bass than the Type-I.  I have a pair on order and will update this entry after auditioning them.

@tomic601  Thank you for kind comments.  I really enjoy this system and except for maybe a couple of cable upgrades I believe I can mark the system as "I'm done!"  All the best to you too.  Cheers.

Looks lovely and well sorted !!!!! Enjoy the music - I am a big fan of AarC as well. Best to you

Chuck,

Thank you for your comments.  Yep, Mick and Patrick are absolutely first rate people.  Mick was just here a couple of hours ago and we got the Ref 330M mono blocks installed.  They need to break in but I can already tell they are a different animal than the Ref 160S.  Best wishes to you in the upcoming year.  Cheers.

Beautiful system and set up. I’m a Chicago area guy and have developed a great relationship with Mick and Patrick, and built my system based on their guidance. Nice to find another local Audiophile. Take care.

Chuck from Naperville.

@jaytor  Thank you for your kind comments.  I agree with you, I really prefer the sound of the system with the speakers well into the room.  The Alexias have no trouble pressurizing the room and this position works well too for my sitting position in the room.  The room treatments indeed make a world of difference.  I have corner bass traps on order and expect them to arrive fairly soon, so I'm looking forward to that.  I will still have some treatments to add to the walls, space permitting.

It's cool that you've heard such a similar system.  I'm enjoying listening to it now as I'm writing this note.  I was initially was going to get the Rossini + clock but since this is likely my last system I figured I'd get the Vivaldi stack.  I have no regrets.  However, I got to spend a few hours listening to the new AR Reference 330 monoblocs about a week ago and they are fantastic, so I'm scheming again!  :-)

Thanks again for your kind comments,
Cheers,

John

Beautiful system that is well set up. It really makes a difference to have the speakers well into the room with nice room treatments. I see so many expensive systems where this isn't the case. Nice job!

I've heard the Alexias with the same AR electronics and similar DAC (Rossini) and the system sounded excellent. I'm sure you are loving it.

@tvad Thank you for your compliments and for sharing your experience and the link, and I apologize for my delayed reply.  The setup you mentioned, a curtain on one side and an acoustic panel of the other side, will likely be what I'll do as well.  The corner treatments I ordered apparently won't arrive until July and after that I'll work on the first reflection point.

Thanks again for taking time to have a look at my system and for your help, and hoping this finds you well,

John

Beautiful space. Well done.

Your idea of heavy curtains on the window doubling as acoustic treatment is a good one. I have done similarly with curtains that mimic silk, backed with black-out curtains. On an opposite wall at the first reflection point is an acoustic panel.

GIK Acoustics has a vast library of prints for their Art Panel acoustic panels.

You should be able to find a print that meets approval.

I want to thank each of you for your kind comments, and I will try to answer your questions individually.

@baylinor,

You are 100% spot-on with your comments about the room acoustics.  I’m following my instincts regarding the room treatment, and it is an ongoing project.  I installed the center diffusion panel based on the common guidance of diffusing the center.  I wasn’t exactly sure what to do then, so flanking the center diffuser are hybrid panels.  I have corner treatments on order for the front wall.  They should arrive in a few weeks.  The corner panels are reversable, so I can set them to be bass traps or hybrid panels.  I’m limited with what I can do for the side walls, although I recognize the need.  There’s a big window on the left side of the room for which we may have some thick curtains made.  On the right wall I’d be happy with the same hybrid panels that are on the front wall but I’m not sure my wife would approve.  I need to find an absorption panel that looks like a painting.  I do have some absorption panels on the ceiling.

The system is still breaking-in and is moving in a nice direction of what I would describe as having detail, roundness, weight, and speed, but you are also spot-on with your comments about it having the potential to become fatiguing if I don’t get its interaction with the room right.  It is indeed an acoustic journey and thank you again for your comments and suggestions.

@fred60,

Though I am new to it, I am currently only streaming using Qobuz.  My basement system has an Innuos streamer that also serves as a Roon core.  The basement and main systems are hard wired together, I used CAT6 ethernet cable, so the Vivaldi is able to pull from the Roon core.  I also have a music collection on a NAS drive, but I haven’t gotten it connected into the system yet.

@randypeck

Thank you for your question.  I made too many system changes all at once to isolate any change the Samson rack made.  My previous system used a Salamander Synergy A/V cabinet.  For the new system I wanted to make a change, and my wife and I like the naturalness of wood.  An audiophile friend, who has much more experience than me, said that the Samson racks were good, so I just went with it.  It seems to work well and is quite solid.

@milpai

Thank you!  My wife is to thank for how it all came together, she has a keen talent for colors and design.  I hoped too that if she selected all the colors, she wouldn’t ask me how much I was spending on this rig, although everyone tells me that I don’t get away with near as much as I think I do!  Her final touch was the Louis Poulsen floor lamps, which I think work very nicely with the setup.

My best wishes to you all, and thank you again for your comments,

John

Very nice setup! Love the clean looks.

Beautiful system and room.  Just wondering, obviously you like the Mapleshades Samson equipment racks.  Did you hear a sufficient improve in your equipment once the Samson racks were installed?

randypeck

Wow-- beautiful system and set-up!  Enjoy!  You going all-in on streaming?

fred60

Beautiful system lineup. Just looking at the room layout, I can almost hear it. I bet it has optimum clarity even maybe too much. Reasoning is, other than the rugs, everything else is mainly reflecting and a lot of diffusing with almost no absorbing. My thought is that you will eventually want to tone down the room as it may become too fatiguing listening to it as is. Either way, with your equipment, I can only imagine how great it can really sound. Enjoy the room acoustic journey.

@aniwolfe Thank you!  The system has only been up and running a few days but I can tell I’m going to enjoy it a lot.

Top Notch!
