I would say the weakness in your system is not the speaker rather its the CD player and cables.

I've thought of that lately, actually, but I've been pretty pleased with these speakers overall... much better than the Kef 105.4 that I had previously.

Any suggestions here for a better speaker? I've heard that the Kef Reference 4/4.2 isnt much better, and I'm not sure what to think of B&W...

I would actually start by replacing the Kefs, unless you are completely in love with them. They are outclassed by the majority of your gear.
