Like you I use a Oppo 970 source, but I'm using its analogue 2 channel output into a power amp. I use the Oppos volume to control the analogue outputs.

I don't want to use a preamp either, but I want to improve the sound with an external DAC. Both Benchmark and Citypulse have modern DACs w/ volume controls and switching for one other analogue source. Citypulse's unit also has a remote. I'm not sure if the volume is active or passive (sounds like a preamp to me). This seems like my only option as most sources with DVD capabilty don't have a volume control built in.

Owner
Please excuse my delay in responding.
I do not have a minimax preamp.
The volume control is that on the Paradigm active speakers. Fortunately, I am able to "balance" the sound using string quartets and my own musical hearing: neither absolute, but adequate for most classical music I listen to. The absence of a volume control on the MF Dac is an example of poor design judgement, IMHO.
Again, my apologies: I never thought to check my listing!15 months is awful!! Sincerely, Jeffery M

I'm not sure I understand your system.
Do you use the Oppo's volume control to control your powered speakers?

Where does the Minimax, dac, buffer come into play?

Seems intriguing.
