Khorns and TacT 410 subwoofers are stacked in seven foot false corners in the front of a 8/13/17 foot room. The Khorns are on the bottom and the subwoofers are on top with a thick shelf separating the speakers. The false corners are made of two layers of 3/4 inch high density fiberboard which are glued and screwed together to avoid bass resonance. The false corners are positioned so the speakers are slightly away from the corner and aiming at the sweet spot forming an equalateral triangle of nine feet for each side. The center LaScala speaker has the base under the 55 inch TV and the mid and high horns in a built-in cabinet over the TV. The room has ASC ISO WALL treatment to avoid room resonance. Three equipment cabinets are on the left wall and have the following: Two Mark Levinson 334 amps are in open sided cabinets on the left and right of the component cabinet. A pair of Bryston 7B-ST amps are located on a shelf above the Mark Levinson amps and used to power the pair of TacT W410 subwoofers. One Placette passive line stage preamp controls the Khorns, and the other controls the LaScala center speaker. A Marchand active crossover is used to send only the lower frequencies to the subs. The crossover point is set at 35Hz which is the low end of the Khorns. No added processors are used to screw up the sound. It's strickly two channel music. The Khorn pair and LaScala work together to provide an increase in panoramic image detail.
System edited: I have just overhauled my system by replacing a Proceed CDP player with an Esoteric X-03 SACD/CD player. I also removed a Klipsch LaScala speaker so there is only one LaScala speaker in the center instead of two. The Klipschorn and LaScala speakers have also been overhauled with new crossovers, mid horns and tweeters. The old midhorns were replaced with ALK Trachorns. The Klipsch tweeters were replaced with JBL 2404 tweeters. All speakers now have ALK Universal crossovers.
System edited: I moved the LaScalas from the rear to the center position. At the rear, The LaScalas provided a theater-like depth of sound quality which was better than the Khorns by themselves. The LaScalas in the center working with the outside Khorns make the whole front wall light up with detailed focused sound like I have never heard before. This change made a vast improvement in my system.
I agree with what you said about less distortion due to less movement of the speaker diaphragm. Does the center LaScala help with the off-axis sound( I have Heresys.)?
Sounds like you will have a very nice setup, Stereo and multichannel can live together with no loss of quality. Most people do not have a room large enough to pull this off or feel that the extra $$$ would be better spent on a more costly two channel system, they may be right in some case, but not always. My system is of the same idea and is working out very well, a much larger room than my old room is what has made this work great for me. My next move is to get rid of the RPTV and go with a FPTV, this will be the iceing on the cake for me. Stereo and multichannel music with the ability to also watch a large screen movie in one room with no loss of sound quality! I have for multichannel music: Sony XA777es sacd player and an Technics DVD-A10 dvd audio player, lots of good multichannel music starting to hit the market with lots more to follow. I use Bent audio passive TVC for two channel pre.
