Description

WIP Built dedicated listening room summer 2016. Room is 26' x 16' x 7.75', Used resilient channel all around to decouple the 5/8 drywall from the studs. Used roxul safe n sound insulation everywhere. Double drywall with green glue for the ceiling.

3x 10awg dedicated lines ran to the system using hubbel industrial outlets.

the systems noise floor is extremely low and the acoustics of the room are pretty good with the gik acoustics stuff, except some bass modes which I will need to address once I get my better mic for REW DSP.

NHT 3.3s set up per nht's manual, 4" from the front wall.

the listening position 1.5x the distance back ad the distance between the speakers. They are about ~12ft apart so the listening seat is approx 18 ft back.

The sound is extremely full and crisp. Soundstage is impressive in its width, height, and depth. center image is strong and speakers do dissapear. I'm a big proponent of sealed woofer enclosures and the 2x 12" and 2x 18" woofers truly create unbelievably clean & linear bass.

NHT 3.3s running full range off the krell KAV 250, and the 2x SI subs crossed over at 60hz. all balanced wiring. I have experimented with bi amping the NHT 3.3s with a hafler p7000 on the low end and the krell up top, but the bass was a bit more muddy. This was ebfore my wild REW though so I will try this again soon.

I'm getting the sound that I want out of my system I just want a smoother sounding amp- thinking threshhold, pass labs, mark levinson. or perhaps picking up quicksilver/shengya/prima luna tube amps to biamp top end of the 3.3s and leave the krell on the bottom end.

I'm constantly working on my digital chain but I think it's at a great place right now, looking to hear as many high end systems as I can to gauge where I'm at sonically.

next thing to work on is carpeting and installing binding posts in the subwoofer boxes, and gettin the room painted.

any comments/criticism/recommendations welcome. I am still very new to this hobby

Ceiling: 8’

Components Toggle details

    • NHT 3.3
NHT 3.3, looking to recap xover soon
    • Krell KAV-250a x3
unit recapped and serviced in 2014. Looking to upgrade to pass/threshold class A amp. this amp surpassed by expectations but looking for something a little smoother while still retaining the details & clarity.
    • Integra Research RDC-7.1
Using as an analog PRE atm with a Ultra Fi iRoc USB DAC as a source. I switch between the ultra fi and the internal differential PCM1704s in the RDC 7.1

when using internal DAC, I use a gustard u12 DDC with USB in from HTPC using PCI-E USB card with external LPS. SPDIF coax out of the gustard into the RDC 7.1 via van den hul thunderline IC
    • Panamax m5100 EX
power conditioner for preamp, DAC. TV and DDC on seperate power bank. 70db noise filtering
    • Stereo Integrity DS4
2x Stereo Integrity DS4 18" subwoofer in a 6 cu ft sealed cabinet. f3 of 27hz. linear 10hz-85hz with mild REW, looking to upgrade mic for better DSP.

Each DVC 4" voice coil sub is wired to 4 ohm being pushed by either a hafler p7000 ~500wpc stereo @ 4 ohm (for critical listening) or 2x QSC mx1500a 1500w bridged @ 4 ohm (fan noise is an issue but these grip the woofers much better, going to relocate amps to adjacent room as soon as I run the wires and electrical.)
    • Hafler p7000
    hafler p7000 350wpc @ 8 ohm class AB MOSFET

have used to bi-amp on low end of the NHT 3.3s with the krell on mids/highs
    • GIK Acoustics acoustic panels & tri corner bass traps
6 acoustic panels at reflection points and 4x tri corner bass traps doubled up in each corner for max absorption. doing to build DIY diffusers for the back wall and additional panels for the ceiling
    • QSC Audio mx1500a
pro audio amp used bridged @ 1500wrms 4 ohm, one per subwoofer.
    • Ultra Fi iRoc
TDA1543 based NOS USB dac designed by larry moore. One of the most musical dacs I've ever heard and while it doesn't compete with resolution and clarity of my differential PCM1704s it really does shine with the "rightness" and listenability of the sound.

Using with a astron LPS and USB via a synergsistic research tesla USB cable. Clean USB power from my HTPC achieved using a PCIE USB card getting data only from the motherboard BUS, it's powered externally from a 12v LPS

Hello, nice work on the room. look into Furutech outlets over Hubbel. Looks similar to my room I built last year. Can't say enough about room accoustics, very necessary, especially bass traps. Your room should sound amazing. Would like to see some updated pictures if completed. Regards,  Ken
