Description

A mid/high power system used mainly for rock / pop and little classical on the side.

With the exception of the VSA speakers and KAS ICs, the complete system was put together from either discontinued or used components. Total cost was $6.6k.

It sounds great with all my music, images quite well, although it appears to throw a wider image to the left than to the right, so I'm still trying to make some adjustments here - my room is very assymetrical, with a set of cupboards on the left and wide open to the right into the dining area. Bass is sufficiently good to eliminate my unsightly black Polk sub. I've no real intention of upgrading any of the components in the next 3 years, next gadget will probably be an iPod & docking station.

Components Toggle details

    • Musical Fidelity CD Pre-24
Combined upsampling CD player and pre-amp. Based on A3.2 pre-amp electronics I think but cosmetically matched to A308 series. Purchased new from Underwood hifi.
    • Musical Fidelity A 308 Cr
250 watts per channel, choke regulated transistor power amp. Purchased used but in superb condition from Audiogon seller. Works great with CD-Pre24
    • Von Schweikert Audio VR4Jr
Slim (8") but deep (20") floor stander with great bass extension and refinement. Sounds good at both high and low volumes
    • PS Audio Xstream Statement 3.0m
I use these AWG 6 cables to drive the bass units. Retail was ~$1100, but I bought these new at a great price from the Audio Advisor. They are not only thick but quite rigid and consequently not that easy to handle.
    • PS Audio Xstream Plus 3.0m
I use these to drive the midrange / tweeter units. May consider an upgrade to silver at some point. Smaller wire gauge (AWG 8) than Statement but overall size not much smaller. Also not easy to handle.
    • KAS Audio Maestro 0.5m
Single 18 gauge silver wire used here. Purchased new from KAS at Audiogon auction.
    • Signal Cable Magic Power 4 feet
    3 of these in total.
    • PS Audio Ultimate Outlet
    High current version.

Rob,

I tried to post something to this same effect last week, but the moderators wouldn't let it see the light of day. You are right, good equipment with no attention to set up. We see it all the time here on the Gon, people should get a clue.

You have some good equipment there. You need to get rid of chair in between the speakers and move your equipment rack behind the speakers.

Get some drapes to go over the windows behind the speakers as well.

Like I said you have too good a system to let room basic acoutic issues mess up.
