Description

I have been updating and changing out this 2 channel system for just a little over one year. I started out with the smaller MG1.6R maggies and fell in love with their sound. Everything about this system is new to me...and I'm having a blast tweaking it out!!

I also have a great 6.1 home theater system upstairs with Pioneer Elite electronics and HD RPTV, B&W speakers and a huge SVS sub.

thank you for the compliments. indeed, it has been rough on everyone this economy. we were hoping not to feel it as much in canada, no such luck. the good news is, been to 3 interviews in the pasr 2 weeks at the same place and going in for the forth and finale one tuesday. looking good.

by the way, love you system, especially the TT... did you notice a big difference on the sound stage when you put your interconnects on those little pods on the floor?

The wife came downstairs to listen to my new Rega TT last night. I broke out some old records she hadn't heard in years and she was impressed with the sound quality. We have been together since 1974 and for most of the 70's and 80's we only listened to LPs of course. Now she wants me to clean some other LPs that she use to really like. I have well over 300 of them babies and it will be fun revisiting some of our old favorites. Long live vinyl!!

Darkkeys,

This room has wood paneling which is very reflective. It took me a while to get the right combination of acoustic treatments to make this room sound great....but I have finally done it. Speaker and listening positions also have a big effect on the sound of my system. But all the experimenting has paid off. This is a very revealing system with a wide and deep sound stage. When I close my eyes, I can't tell where the speakers are. And the tone of the music is oh so sweet.

Good luck with your new maggies and don't be afraid to experiment. BTW, I have my speakers on Mye stands with casters so that they are easy to move around. I found this to be a great help with speaker positioning.

Very Nice System. I notice you use room tuning bass traps, etc. Did you experience any problems with certain frequencies too soft or loud before installing the traps while using the Maggies?

This summer I purchased the Maggie 1.7s and on a couple CDs I am experiencing bass boom for the first time in this room.

These are my first none box speakers. Never a problem with prior speakers and was wondering about your experience. Thanks.

Awesome setup, similar to mine prior to it's current state. Three things I did wth my 3.6Rs you may want to try that will make your music different (your call as to whether it is better) that won't break the bank- try a Benchmark DAC1 USB with the internal jumpers set to 0 db. Other wise it is so-so. You have to get the newest model as they now use higher quality Motorola devices in the output stage that really make a diffence to my ears. Bryston 4BSST is the best amp I have introduced to the maggies, over a long list of suitors. Also the new Bryston DAC is spectacular but a little pricey. CJ is great gear, but balanced gear exists for a very good reason. Nobody ever goes back to single ended after they have been exposed to decent balanced equipment. I see tons of would be customers for Connie J, Musical Fidelity, others turned away by their single endedness. Even in the worlds of tbe and solid state, the best of both camps are balanced. To really make the most of the maggies dynaics and open abilities, try out a balanced tube pre amp from BAT or ARC. Don't need one of their megabuck models, BAT' special edition 3 series will take all but the latest ARC ref models. I wish I had this info when I first got my maggies. Many tweeks are a matter personal pref but when I implemented these I thought, where has this sound been all this time? enjoy-

I am looking at a lot of Maggies right now because I am going to buy a pair. Just a thought about your picture. It looks like you could shorten your speaker cables by several feet. Shorter speaker cables will improve your sound. Check Audiogon and look for a shorter pair. You might be able to make money by selling yours for more than you pay for the shorter ones.

coxhaus

I like your Maggies. I am going to try some soon.
My imaging improved when a moved all my rack and contents off to the side and opened up the space between the speakers.

Great tip Pummill - never thought about casters. Mine are on small rugs that slide on tile floors (sorta). BTW - meant to tell you what a nice job you did with the room and selection of equipment. In the right room Maggies are tops!

I also have Mye stands, not shown in above picture. As with my previous 1.6 Mye stands, I have installed casters so that I can experiment with positioning. Just a little movement makes a big difference.

Here is a link that shows the 1.6 stands with casters:

In Magnepan's literature they suggest that placement of the tweeters (inside or outside) is a listener-preference matter. According to them:

"Room acoustics and your own personal tastes will determine whether to position the panels with the tweeters on the inside or outside edge. In most rooms placing them on the outside will give good dimensionality. Placing them on the inside will, in most cases, increase the central focus and improve imaging."

My 20.1s (with Mye Stands) are in a large room and positioned with the tweeters on the outside. It offers a very full encompassing musical presentation. With the Maggies slightly towed in it often sounds as if the center channel was on when, in fact, it is not. Just my experience.

I switched tweeters to the inside some time ago. Much better. I do like to experiment with these babies!!

pummill

The left and right speakers are reversed.
The tweeters should be inward, not outward.
Look at Apogee ribbon speakers as a reference.

Very nice set up Pummill! Looking at your gear, and having owned the 3.5's, CJ-12A, and Nordost cables myself, I can easily say you have a very balanced sounding set up.

I like your room treatments, and know how important it becomes with the Maggies to get the sound just right.

Well done. Congrats and enjoy!

GO MAGGIES!

Thanks for the kind words about my system. I do enjoy it.

Jtori, I have drooled over your system since the first time I saw it. Nice job!!

pummill

From the gear to careful room set up a very nicely done system. Gotta love those Maggies.

glenfihi

Nice system with well thought-out sensible gear. As a fellow Maggie owner (Virtual Systems, Done for Now, Sanctum Sanctorum), I applaud the choices you've made. I believe Maggies make a lot of sense in most home settings; in my opinion, dipoles mate to the room nicely and excite modes far less than most dynamic driver-based designs. Like you, I found adding subs and employing carefully selected acoustic treatments made a world of difference. I'm considering a pair of Mye stands for my 3.5s and am interested in knowing more about your experience with them. Again, nice setup! Enjoy the listening.

System edited: I sold the Marsh preamp and got the phono staged Conrad Johnson preamp to get back in to vinyl.

Is that a Marsh p2000t preamp on the rack?

kkm

Its almost a shame not turning that into a theater setup. I vision 4qty svs ultra 13's....1 per corner. A nice 65" lcd on the wall, and some maggy surrounds and center.

Nice system!
