Try moving your front speakers several feet out of the corners and revisit subwoofer settings. You could start by turning the sub off and seeing what your speakers are doing by themselves. Run the fronts full range and add the sub in with the lowest crossover setting only to the point where it is adding without muddying the mid bass. Perhaps you're already doing that, but if your mids are getting lost I would wonder whether they're just being swallowed by the bass.

Ok, time for a change. My system sounds hollow in the middle. Vocals seem to get lost, just need a change. Where will the biggest bang for the buck come? CD player, or Pre amp, Amp? or something else? Going to keep speakers

Check out the Mapleshade line for calbles and power products. The new PS Audio power conditioner is very good as are the Isoclean products. If youcan budget it the Walker Audio Velociter is great. See my posts for ideas on vinyl.
