I've had a PS Audio A500, Class D Audio SDS-250C, Wyred 4 Sound ST-500, and the Crown XLS2000. I obviously like the idea of class D, and they've all been very good amps, but I end up feeling like there's something missing (texture at lower volumes?), and it's hard not to go back to the HK when I enjoy it just as much and it cost me $100 on eBay. It does a fine job with the Arcs, too.

I sold my PA2200 a few months ago. After recapping it what was I thinking? Why not just put it in the closet for future use?
Glad you're enjoying your amp again.

FWIW, I have used several class D amps and they never seem to stick around for long.

The is something wrong with Audiogon's website, because I wasn't able to edit my system either so I deleted it.

I've no experience w/ class D amps like your Crown, but I've read many comments about how the sound is just not right as you've found out. They may be fine for HT and sound reinforcement, but have no place in hi-fi according to what I've read on other forums like AudioAsylum.

.. and, back to the HK. The Crown was excellent, but there's something about this HK PA2200. Just sounds right.

Can't seem to edit my system anymore, but I just swapped out the HK amp for a Crown XLS2000. So far, so good ...

Haven't checked in here in awhile .... I'm loving the current setup, especially the Shahinians. Unlike many changes I've made, which impress and first and then start sounding the same, the Arcs just get better and better.

afranta

Your system has gone through some remarkable changes. How does it compare to your earlier and simpler system.

I commented here quite some time ago. I hope your system fully survived your children's younger years. I've been very lucky with mine.

I bought a turntable recently and my 10 year-old daughter and I have been making the rounds at flea markets and thrift shops hunting for vinyl. It always startles the sellers to see a kid near a record.

Hi Andy,
Actually, I got rid of it a couple of months ago, although I was very happy with it's performance. Kind of like a British int amp phase I went through having sold the Creek for a Ditton Elan Di-260 made by Celestion. Now the Ditton is gone and replaced by an Antique Sound Lab MGsi15DT. Now that I've gone back to tubes, I'm done experimenting with different integrateds.

I did like the Creek better than the Ditton as is was sweeter and more realistic sounding, whereas the Ditton was very dynamic and transparent but didn't draw you in as much.

You did! Do you still have the Creek? IF you do, I hope you're enjoying it.
Best, Andy

afranta

Wait a second, I think I just recognized your screen name. Didn't I buy a Creek 4330 from you thru a different website about a year ago?
Best regards,
Lou

Still getting used to them, but the sound great. The directionality of the sound is very different. They make me realize that, even with speakers that throw a big soundstage, the sound still seems to be coming from the speakers. The Arcs seem to locate instruments in space.

afranta

Shahinian Arcs? Wow.
I saw a pair of those for sale a while back and while i was researching them they were snatched up. Hmmm.
How do they sound? Do they provide all the spaciousness I've read about?

System edited: Picked up a pair of Shahinian Arcs. Still have the Snells, but I'm enjoying these right now.

Interesting ... Love to see it.

My system current? Nope, not even close. The Mac Mini is the only real piece of equipment in my system.

Maybe I'll update it this weekend...

Hi Tim, Got mine cheap, too. It's a really nice amp! Just looked at your system--is it current? Big changes! --Andy

afranta

Hey Andy, I have one of those PA2200s sitting in my bedroom. I got mine a few years ago for cheap on ebay. I recapped it, installed some Cardas binding posts, ran new internal wiring to the binding posts and finally, installed an IEC jack for a detachable power cable. None of this was really necessary, it was mainly done for the heck of it.

I love this amp, just wish it weren't so large.

The Touch is great. I've run it with a Benchmark DAC1, and with the DAC it sounds different than the cd player, but really just as good. Bare it's still excellent--far better than the Duet it replaced--and it's not really a compromise since I mostly listen to CDs.

afranta

I agree, I like the stands also.

How do you like the squeezebox? Do you use it more often then playing CDs? Have you compare the sound quality?
