This is my dream come true system. It's been evolving since I got into high end audio in the late 1980s. A big part of the system is the listening room with 5/8" drywall and acoustic ceiling. The room is 14' wide by 17' long with 8' ceiling. The amp has a dedicated 20 amp circuit and does the remainder of the components.
Couldn't figure out how to respond to you individually, so this note is for both of you.
Response to Jayctoy: Hi and thanks for your comments. I don't have access to a tube CD player, but I do have a Bel Canto SEP-1 tube pre-amp, which I have tested in my system and it sounds great. I still prefer the KCT's tighter base and high-end extension though. The Krell FPB amp's manual warns about connecting tube equipment. However, the FPB amp works with tube gear if its output is capacitively coupled OR you install the input coupling capacitors in the FPB (a jumper).
Response to Audio Al: Hi Al, thanks for you comments. Yes, the room & corner tunes improve the sound. The obvious tip-off is a significant decrase in the slap echo in the room (this means the sound isn't bouncing around all over the place). I also hear a major improvement in stereo imaging. Image position is more accurate and images are better focused.
If you have a chance, try to connect a tube cd player, I do have the Andra I, they like tube a lot, the only concern is Krell gear are not tube friendly, correct me if I am wrong. You do have a good system.
Truly a killer system. I wanted to know if your Michael Green Corner tunes and the 48" floorstanders set in the room corners have make a significant difference in the sound of your system? Take care and enjoy the music!
Thank you very much for your comments. I agree 100% with everything you said. The dedicated listening room witht he freedom to "do my own thing" is the key :-)
This one of the better systems I have seen anywhere. I too listen in the nearfield. To my ears you hear more, the soundstage is more realistic, and because you are not listening as loud and using as much power, the system isn't "shouting" at you. Things sound smoother, less forced, and a lot more natural. I also like the fact that your speakers aren't a mile apart either. I have found that the farther your speakers are apart, the more the images seem to thin out and become less substantial and less three dimensional. Congratulations on your system, I would love to hear it!
Yes, my listening position is nearfield. I find that in a relatively small room like mine, nearfield really opens up the soundstage. I used the George Cardas Golden Cuboid formula to calculate speaker placement and seating position. The speakers are 75" from the back wall and 46" from the side walls. Listening position is 58" from the speakers. The room is 14' wide and 17' long.
Congratulations on a beautiful system! I'm a big fan of the KCT, which seems to have somehow slipped under the radar of most of the big hi-fi reviewers. How close do you listen? It's hard to tell from the photos, but it looks like you're in the nearfield.
